Unit 1 discussed about both the teachers and learners; their qualities, roles and responsibilities. I learned about the nine roles of a teacher; namely, the Manager, who normally stands in front of the class discussing and giving explanations; the Organizer, one who organises various class activities as well as giving instructions and feedbacks; the Assessor, one who gives feedback and correction; the Prompter, one who encourages the students if they lose track on their course during class activities; the Participant, one who joins the activities as an equal, not as a teacher; the Tutor, one who gives guidance and encouragement; the Facilitator, one who devices activities for the learners and completely withdraw himself from the activity to let the learners do the task given to them themselves; the Model, one who is usually an English native speaker and the Monitor, one who observes the learner as well as the activity, whether it is going successfully or not. The unit also talked about the different factors to consider in a learner. These factors include age, learning experience, life experience, culture, language level, and motivation for learning. The unit also tackled the different language level to help teachers provide what the learners need. This unit has simply shown me how important and complex the relationship is between a teacher and a learner. Knowing these information will enable me to identify and provide what my learners need.
