Unit 19 explores various forms of EFL teaching which require a range of different skills, techniques, and activities. These specialized groups include beginners, individual students, young learners, and Business English /English for Specific Purposes students. The differences between monolingual and multilingual classes are also covered. This unit lays out the methodology and techniques needed to teach beginners, in addition to possible problems, motivational considerations, and suggestions for adapting one?s teaching approach to suit beginner students. There are also suggestions for teaching individual students along with a list of suitable 1-1 activities to enhance the language-growth process. Teaching English to professional people requires the teacher to balance the clients? wants and needs with those of the company, and to carry out a needs analysis to help plan a successful course. Since I am interested in teaching young learners, I benefited very much from the knowledge imparted in that particular section of the unit. The differences between teaching young learners and adults are highlighted, and suggestions are given for maintaining class discipline and creating an amiable and welcoming classroom environment. I also learnt that for all types of learners ? and especially in monolingual classes - it is important to rely on English as the language of instruction and to refrain from using the mother tongue in the classroom.
