This unit provides a succinct but comprehensive guide to troubleshooting common \"problem situations\" when teaching English as a foreign language. For example, in the first lesson, the teacher should not refer to the course book but instead make efforts to establish a rapport with students and find out about the students' interests and ability levels in English. The unit offers great examples for achieving the aforementioned, and of \"warmers\" used at the beginning of class to slowly ease students into the learning environment. This unit also provides guidance about teaching to a class with students of multiple varying ability levels. Some ideas to address this difficult situation include using different materials for different groups of students within the class, or using the same materials but assigning different tasks by ability level. Also, the teacher may choose to pair stronger students with weaker ones to allow sharing of strengths and collaboration across ability levels (i.e. the stronger student may be able to \"teach\" or clarify for the weaker one). The unit also offers guidance on teaching to large classes and classes with reluctant students. Lastly, the unit provides suggestions for appropriate (and limited) use of native language in the classroom and addressing the purportedly common issue of difficulty with listening tasks.
