Evaluation of the students? knowledge and proficiency in English can be done in several ways, depending on what is being tested, when and how often the testing occurs, what the result of the test is going to be used for further on. When at the beginning of a course, the teacher will generally give a diagnostic test, which will provide information about the students? level of language, strengths and weaknesses. Based on the results, the teacher will organize their approach to language teaching. If a new student needs to be places in a language study group, they will have to take a placement test first. The result of the test will help decide what level group to place the new student in. When already in a language group, having been studying for a while, the students may take progress tests, which will assess their progress. These tests will contain items which the students have been taught in class. They enable the students to judge how well they progressed over a shorter or longer period of time. At the end of a learning unit or term the students will give an achievement test that will measure individual progress. Other tests, particularly standardized tests, like TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge tests, are devised to measure the learner?s general level of language mastery. They are usually required for academic or professional purposes. Whatever the particular reason for tests, they are the main instrument to measure and evaluate learning.
