Unit 4 introduces the 4 tenses of the present in the English language: present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. The present simple form is used for habitual actions, factual statements, commentaries, instructions, news/current events, present storytelling, and sequencing of historical events. The present continuous form always contains the auxiliary very to be + the -ing form of a main verb in the sentence. It is used to describe ongoing actions at the time of speaking, temporary actions which may or may not be currently taking place, frequently recurring actions, background events to a present situation, developing/changing situations and regular actions which may occur around set times. The present perfect form contains the auxiliary verb to have as well as the part participle of the main verb. It is used to discuss completed actions which took place at an indefinite time, completed past actions which may reoccur after the time of speaking, events which occurred in the past but remain true in the present and may or may not continue, and past actions with determined present results. The present perfect continuous form consists of the auxiliary verb to have and the present participle (-ing form) of the main verb in the sentence. This form is used to discuss incomplete but ongoing activities which may have continued for a determinant amount of time and recently completed actions which yield a present result.
