Speaking can be focused on either accuracy and fluency. In the study phase of the lesson the teacher will focus on accuracy and can make use of, for example, controlled speaking activities such as choral and individual listening, following the 3x3 principle and prompting. In the activate stage of the lesson is room for practicing fluency. The main point is the students are communicating and feeling confident using the language. In order to encourage students to speak the teacher can give, for example, a lot of controlled and guided practice before doing fluency activites and also making the activity purposeful will encourage the student to speak and use the language. When preparing for free practice the focus shouldn't be too much on the product. The process in getting there is important as well, the students need guidance before they can do a fluency exercise. In the preparation time the students will be getting useful practice as wel, therefore the teacher should not cut down on time needed for preparations. Reading, a lot of reading, is a good way to help students with spelling. Seeing over and over how words are spelled will help them to remember. This is so important for English because it is far from a phonetic written language. Games are not just fun, but are a great way to learn for students and can be used a lot. Games can be useful for either controlled and free practice and can be used in both the engage and activate phases of a lesson.
