Many different teaching aids can be used to make the classroom more interesting, effective and less dependent on a textbook. These include:- 1) The board - the board should be planned first on a piece of paper to make it more effective. Boards hold and draw the attention of students very well. 2) Interactive White Boards (IWB) - There are many different types of IWB ranging in price and sophistication. 3) Overhead projectors - often used as a substitute to white boards, these are a very good way of focusing student attention. Projector sheets can be prepared well in advance to make the lesson more efficient. 4) Visual Aids - the most common are real objects, photo's and pictures. The can portray meaning more quickly and effectively than verbal explanation. 5) Worksheets and work cards 6) Cassette recorder - useful for teaching real life language as opposed to the teachers voice and therefore give a more real life perspective. 7) CD player - See cassette recorder 8) Videos and MP3s - can be used for presenting information, giving background to a topic, various forms of dialogue and interaction, building listening skills etc. 9) Video camera - predominantly used to record students during an activity and then to play it back to them for analysis and discussion. 10) Dictionaries 11) Course books - previously covered 12) Resource books - useful for adapting , supplementing and replacing material from a course book. 13) Photocopiers 14) Computers
