Teach English in Beipo Zhen - Zhanjiang Shi
Unit 1 covered the different qualities and relationships between teachers and learners. The question of what makes a ?good? teacher or learner was addressed, as well as the various roles that a teacher may take on over the course of a lesson. Some of the distinctions between learners of different ages and levels were also discussed. The topic that was most thought-provoking to me is motivation. The unit states that adult students are often more motivated than younger learners, which makes sense if the adults choose to take part in the class by their own initiative. However, in many of my business English classes, employees are encouraged or even required by management to take part in the lessons. Sometimes the students see value in learning English, but sometimes they find it a waste of time because they don?t use the language on a daily basis. I agree that it is partly the responsibility of the teacher to be able to motivate students. However, this is something I continually struggle with. Listed under the header ?What makes a good teacher? is to be ?lively and entertaining?. I don?t consider those qualities to be part of my natural personality, and I wonder if it is possible to cultivate them. What else could help to motivate students in a business English course? The text also states that keeping lessons interesting and varied will help to motivate students. I hope that the upcoming units may help me to achieve that.
