Authentic materials are those that any native speaker might come across : hear or read about. These materials can be useful for language learners too because they're more realistic than non-authentic or language based learning materials (or even created ones). Students will gain a lot more confidence using them if they are able to understand them well. In this case it is best to make sure the article is appropriate for their ability. Created materials are great because they can add supplementary practice to the course book. These are usually created by the teachers so things like a role play or flashcards will help to make learning more fun and interesting too. In the lesson I learned about the advantages and disadvantages of using course books and how to use them in the best possible way. I think some of the best advantages are the fact that they are easier to use and don't require so much time. They can act as a syllabus and help new teachers plan their lessons more effectively. On the downside, some coursebooks may not be suitable for all students and they may find them boring too. To make course books more effective teachers need to be willing to incorporate their own contributions with created materials to support the course book as well. There needs to be a balance in the lesson and not depend solely on the book throughout a lesson. A teacher who is open to try new ideas and is able to come up with creative activities will be the most effective.
