Unit 7 ? Teaching new language: Vocabulary, grammar and function. A concise overview of the 7th unit: -Teaching vocabulary -Introducing grammatical structures -Teaching language functions Grammar is often said to be the tree trunk and branches of a language while vocabulary and functions are the leaves that add beauty and variety. Teaching vocabulary: Vocabulary is very important to the students, especially at the early stages when students are motivated to learn the basic words they need to get by in the language. - Selecting vocabulary - What do students need to know about a vocabulary item? - Techniques for vocabulary teaching: 1. Engage 2. Study 3. Activate - Typical ESA vocabulary lesson: A typical ?straight arrow? structured lesson (for household furniture vocabulary) for lower level students might look something like this: 1. Engage ? open class activity where students share information about where they live, they can bring pictures or draw a floor plan to show other students. 2. Study ? teacher shows a small text or plays dialogue, checks pronunciation, spelling and meaning. 3. Activate - teacher tells small groups or pairs of students that they can design their perfect house, later students present their dream house to the class and class has a discussion. Introducing grammatical structures: Students will need to know what the language means, how it is used, what the grammatical form is and how it is said/written. - Techniques for presenting and practicing language structures: 1. Engage 2. Study 3. Activate - Typical ESA grammar lesson: A typical ESA patchwork grammar lesson (films and books using past simple tense) for mid level students. 1. Engage ? students discuss favorite books. 2. Activate ? in pairs students write a brief synopsis of a book or film they have seen. 3. Study ? from the synopsis, analyze the usage of the past simple tense. 4. Activate ? in groups students write a story from picture prompts. 5. Study ? group passes the story to another group who check for correct usage of past tense. 6. Activate ? chain story communication game. Teaching language functions: Language functions include areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing and disagreeing, suggesting and etc. -Typical ESA function lesson: A typical function (inviting) ESA boomerang type lesson could be: 1. Engage ? students talk in open class about their favorite leisure activities. 2. Activate ? students walk around class inviting peers to join them in their favorite activities. 3. Study ? teacher and students listen to invitation dialogue on tape. 4. Activate ? using new language students role-play in pairs. Certain conclusions can be drawn: Grammar is often said to be the tree trunk and branches of a language while vocabulary and functions are the leaves that add beauty and variety. Students need to be motivated, be exposed to the language and have the opportunity to use it. This course is focused on Engage-Study-Activate (ESA), as ESA is the most effective and the most logical of all the methodologies for new teachers. ?The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.? William Arthur Ward
