I watched 2 videos titled Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 which showed foreign students being taught English. Both lessons had the same instructor teaching the same material to the same class. I had to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of each lesson. I concluded that the teacher's demeanor in Lesson 1 exhibited poor teaching qualities and skills. Lesson 2 showed the more effective approach to teaching. In Lesson 1 the teacher was ill-prepared bordering on incompetent, rude, condescending, dismissive and intimidating, all of which were unprofessional. It was truly painful to watch. There were many examples of him being ill-prepared. One being, he didn't follow the guidelines of the ESA method. He skipped the engage phase thereby not motivating or encouraging the class's interest. There was no pronunciation drill in his study phase. There was no one-on-one interaction with his students. He did not monitor them while they worked; at one point he actually thumbed through a book. During the activate phase he didn't pair or group the students so they could interact and share ideas. Also, he appeared to refer to his notes often as if following a script; he forgot to write the personal pronoun 'we' in his can/can't conjugations until he remembered it nearly at the end of the class; he lied to a student when he said the words 'can' and 'could' were the same, 'could' is the past tense of 'can'; he didn't have paper for the class to draw their \"fantasy animal\". It is generally rude not to introduce yourself. Plus, he didn't try to learn his students' names. It conveyed his lack of interest in them and his unapproachability. Also, when a student asked him a question he rudely said \"I don't understand\" and ignored the question. He tried to elicit a response using complex terms such as 'modal auxiliary verb' and 'interrogative form'. He was condescending when there was no response from the class and he scoffed that it was very, very easy several times. The class looked bored and confused. Three times he handed out work sheets and gave no instructions or explanation. You could see the intimidation on some of the students' faces as their eyes darted around the class. Instead of giving positive reinforcement he chose to be dismissive when he didn't like some of the feedback answers from his work sheets. And finally, the man never smiled! In Video Lesson 2 the teacher's skills and behavior positively impacted the class dynamics which were the complete opposite of Video 1. First, he started his class with a smile and an introduction, then asked the students to display their names so he could learn them. He properly followed the techniques of the ESA method. He began the engage phase by playing a game and pairing the students which motivated them to participate. He referenced their country, Thailand, and used pictures, gestures and mimes. He spoke clearly and didn't use unnecessary terms like 'modal auxiliary verb'. He individually drilled them on their pronunciation. He was inclusive instead of alienating. He gave examples and instructions with his work sheets. Again, he paired them to do the activate activity and he had time to see and hear about all the \"fantasy animals\". This was because he followed his scheduled time frames for each event. He displayed enthusiasm and a sincere concern for his students to learn. This inspired confidence in their desire to learn English.
