Most Common situations teachers face in classroom are discussed as follows: 1. First lessons: First lessons are important as rapport is established during these lessons and the teacher sets the tone for the rest of the class. Such classes fall into two categories: - New group: The students do not know each other and maybe unfamiliar with EFL methodology. - Existing group: The students are likely to know each other and are familiar with EFL teaching. When faced with first lesson, the teacher will not resort to the course book but instead tries to establish rapport between the students (in case of new group), and between the teacher and the students (in case of existing group). The teacher will try to find out about the students? needs and aspirations with English and the English level of each class member. A few activities that can be included in the first lesson are questionnaire/survey, ?tell us about? board game, pass the ball game and needs analysis. 2. Warmers: Warmers are usually short, fun, communicative activities designed to get students motivated to use English. Typical warmer ideas include Hangman, Pictionary, tongue twisters and memory games. These activities get the students warmed up and in the mood for English. They are especially useful if they can be linked to the Study phase of the lesson. 3. Different levels: It is challenging for the teacher if there are students have varying levels of English. Gaps start to appear as some students learn quickly than others. The teacher can deal with this by using different materials appropriate to the level of students or by using the same material with different tasks. Stronger students can be paired with weaker ones so that the stronger student can assist the weaker student. 4. Large class: Large classrooms are equally challenging as teacher has to involve al the students of the class equally. The teacher can use a number of techniques to create successful classes. The students can be handed over worksheets or use pair/group work to maximize student involvement. The voice must be audible and board work must be visible for the whole class. Group leaders should be appointed to keep classroom management easier. 5. Use of native language: Students must be made to listen and talk in English to improve their language skills. There might be a few cases where the students would be unable to express their thoughts in English. There are a few techniques a teacher can use to avoid students using their native language. The teacher should make sure that the students have necessary language to cope with the lessons. The explanation should be clear to all the students. The teacher should constantly encourage the students to use only English in the speaking activities. 6. Reluctant students: Some students do not want to talk or participate in class due to intimidation or lack of confidence. Such students can be encouraged to participate using plenty of pair work, controlled practice and role-play. The students can also record his voice in a tape recorder so that he feels less intimidating. 7. Difficulties with listening texts: This is a common problem with almost all EFL students. Teachers must pre-teach any difficult vocabulary that they might listen in the text. The tape must be played several times if the student does not understand. The teacher should hand out the printed script or read it out more slowly only as a last resort
