Teach English in LiangjiAdun Zhen - Zhangye Shi
Video 1 -The teacher doesn?t have a good knowledge of the lesson for example he can?t explain to the students the difference between can and could. He lacks confidence. -Throughout the lesson, the teacher has little to no eye contact with the students. So there isn?t any rapport between him and the students. He is less committed as he has a divided attention. Most of the time, he looks through the window/outside while lecturing the students and often sits down in between lessons. At one point, he even sits down and reads a novel. -Beside, he is barely audible and doesn?t speak with clarity which makes it difficult for the students to understand him. -He has no teaching aids or materials of any kind and he doesn?t use gestures. -He knows just the names of two students and calls them at the start to answer the question as opposed to using the names of the students at the end of the questions. -He turns his back a lot to the students as he spends much time writing on the board. -There is no balance between TTT and STT as most of the time, the teacher is the only one talking. A lot of time is taken away from the student. -He shows no interest or has no passion for what he is doing by trashing the lesson plan. Thus keeps no record. -No time management and poor lesson planning as he doesn?t use the three stages of engage, study and activate. -The students seem lost, confused, intimidated and not understanding throughout the lesson. -They are not writing and not motivate in any way to participate in the class. -They don?t ask questions except for the one who asked for the meaning of can and could. -There isn?t any STT so there is no participation in the class. Hence, the objectives of the lesson isn?t met/ achieved Video 2 There is a huge disparity between the two classes. The second class is more successful for a number of reasons; 1. The teacher has a positive and engaging attitude in the lesson which provokes the students to respond with a high level of participation. 2. He starts by breaking the ice, for example he introduces himself and asks each student to do same. He warms up the students. 3. He brings along all the teaching materials/ aids for example flash cards to facilitate teach and understanding. 4. He engages the students by playing games with them. Thinking the names of many animals as possible within 2 minutes (guess work for prompting the students to understand the lesson). 5. He is fully committed and knows the names of the students and uses them properly/correctly. 6. He uses a lot of body language and gestures to make the lesson more understandable. 7. He has a well structured lesson plan, manages time effectively and uses a lot of examples to demonstrate the meanings and uses of can and can?t. 8. His voice is loud and clear this time and the students are more active and lively. 9. Better classroom management, group students up for pair work. It?s a participatory class as students say and spell the names of the animals and also say want the animals can and can?t do. 10. There is a balance between TTT and STT. 11. The presentation is successful as the teacher effectively applied the three stages of engage, study and activate. 12. The students are very happy and show their appreciation at the end of the class because they understood the lesson. 13. The teacher keeps his lesson plan for future references and self assessments.
