I've been teaching English for some time now and one thing that I have always liked is grammar. Therefore I enjoyed this unit quite a lot. There are some parts of speech that are more challenging for students and some are less. First it talked about nouns- which are names of people, animals, things. There are main types generally know as common, proper, abstract etc. Then we have plurals that indicate more than one. Sometimes we just add -a however in some cases it gets more difficult (One sheep- two sheep, one half- two halves etc.) We distinguish nouns as countable (table, cat etc.) and uncountable (water, rice etc.) Sometimes there are nouns that can be countable and uncountable- it depends on the situation. Adjectives describe nouns. If we describe something with more than just one adjective, we need to follow some order. One basic is: size -> age-> color-> material. For example a big old brown wooden dog. When it co se to comparitions we have comparatives and superlatives. Another part of speech often challenging for many students are articles. There are two types of articles- definite (the) and indefinite (a,an). Sometimes we have to use definite, sometimes indefinite. It depends on many factors. Generally we use \"the\" article when the noun is particular or specific, unique. However there are some more rules. Another article that English has is called \"zero article\". We use it when talking about general ideas/things. From my opinion articles can be a very difficult topic and it's never too late to practice using them even though we may think that we've already mastered them. It brings me to another part of speech that can give students hard times - verbs. There are either transitive verbs or intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs are directly followed by an object (cut, make etc.) however intransitive verbs CANNOT be directly followed by an object (go, arrive etc.) Then we have infinitives. Which means - verbs in their base forms (to go, to swim etc.) There are 4 forms of verbs. - base form - past simple - present participle - past participle There are also some irregular verbs. Often cause a lot of troubles to students. And auxiliary verbs (do,is, have) those verbs help us build a sentence structure. Another part of speech is known as adverbs. There are many types of adverbs like - time, manner, frequency etc. We can make them out of adjectives E.g.: slow-> slowly We follow this rule: place-> manner-> time Gerunds are -ing forms of verbs when used as a noun. For example we can say \"running sis exhausting\" -> running here is the subject and a gerund. On the other side when we have \"I go running every day\" -> running is the object of the verb go here. When it comes to pronouns there are personal (I, you, he, she,me, him etc.), possessive pronouns (mine, yours, theirs etc.), reflexive (myself, himself etc.), relative (who, which etc.) Prepositions/conjunction Prepositions can pair words in sentences and they show us relationship between words. There are some well known prepositions - of time (at,in, on etc.) movement (to,into, from etc.) and place (between, next to etc.) Conjunctions join words in sentences (or,but, and etc, as soon as, before etc.) From this Unit i have learnt how important grammar is. It basically gives us information about a relationship between words in a sentence. Therefore if we don't know English grammar, it's much harder for us to make and use sentences correctly.
