The present simple and the present continuous are the easiest for students to grasp but when they begin to study the present perfect and present perfect continuous, that is when things begin to get confusing even for us natives. There are many nuances around usages, which are explained throughout this lesson. Understanding these are the key. For example with present perfect continuous, we would use to describe an incomplete and ongoing activity where as with present continuous we would use when talking about an action that is in progress while speaking. We need to distinguish these points clearly along with when using irregular verbs, another tricky business.
