This unit takes a look at so-called: receptive skills (reading and listening). The skills involve receiving information and they can be contrasted with so-called: productive skills (speaking and writing). All skills are equitably important when teaching the language. As we learn from the chapter, there are many reasons and motives for us to read and listen. We can do it for a purpose or just to entertain ourselves. Readers and listeners use many reading techniques including: skimming, scanning, or reading to get detailed information. Usually listening causes more problems than reading as the recording cannot be stopped or rewound whenever we wish to do it.
