This unit covered the teaching of receptive skills. There are two kinds of receptive skills: reading and listening. Reading and listening are utilized for a purpose, for fun, or for both. There are many different ways in how we read and listen. Some examples would be predictive skills, specific information (scanning), general idea (skimming), detailed information, and deduction from context. When teaching receptive skills it's important to choose appropriate level material. Material should teach the students new vocabulary without overwhelming them. Finding a balance to teach new material without destroying student confidence is what a teacher should accomplish.
