Receptive skills are critical in that students must be able to receive and understand a new language to be able to reproduce it effectively, and thus these skills must be built on intentionally by teachers. These ?passive? skills are equally as important as productive skills, and thus the relationship between productive and receptive skills is one of mutual support. Thus, students begin able to read, for both pleasure and purpose, will further help to build their ability to write fluently. I thus now understand to a greater extent the importance of exposing students to a new language in a multitude of ways (through audio listening, texts, movies, etc.).
