This unit focused on the receptive skills - reading and listening. The unit outlined the major reasons for reading and listening into two categories namely for a purpose and for entertainment. The unit gave examples of each reason. The unit also showed that readers and listeners used specialized skills when reading and writing. These include predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. The unit also showcased some of the tools that can be utilized when teaching reading and writing including pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts, topics, creating interest and developing tasks that promote understanding.
