This last lesson was about common problems that teachers face in the classroom. A common problem that I have had in the past is teaching a new group of students. As I have mentioned before I used to teach at an Adult Academy in South Korea. The dynamics of the class can change month to month. One month you could have an existing group and the next month it will be a totally new group of students. One of the biggest issues I had was getting the students to talk to one another. Korean students tend to be shy, and many times during breaks the students would sit in silence, and use their smart phones. Usually during our first class we did a questionnaire, and introduced each other. I felt that was great ice breaker. This lesson provided other options as well. I think that a needs analysis is another good way to get to know your students. From a needs analysis you also get to know your students a bit by reading their answers. Another issue that was touched on during this unit was teaching different levels. My former school didn't have the best level testing procedure. Sometimes students would force their way into higher level classes. One bit of advice that was given during this Unit that was helpful was giving the same material but different tasks. I think this a great idea. You can engage higher level students by giving them more difficult tasks. Give the weaker students something less complicated. I think this is a good way of keeping everyone in the class happy.
