In this unit we have looked at special categories of students, with a particular focus is on beginner classes, children and business English students/clients. We have also looked at multilingual vs. monolingual classes and one-to-one classes Each of these special groups require a different style of teaching and have very different needs. For example, in a beginner class, the teacher must be very careful in their own use of language and must also ensure that the pace of the classes and materials are suitable for the class. Visual approaches work well. In classes for children and young people, motivation can be more of a problem but this can be solved by ensuring that activities are varied and also very short. By making sure that materials are appropriate for the age-group, and that they in olive the interests of the children, motivation and children's natural curiosity and innate learning ability can be triggered. Business students/clients require more spe it is vocabulary and skills training than general English learners and finding out what these are at the beginning of (or before the start of) a course is vital to creating a successful course of study. A needs analysis is a must with these groups. One-to-one classes still require students to improves grammar and vocabulary even if these are lasses are conversation-based. Providing reading material that contains the target language elements can promote discussion of these that can then enable more spoken practice.
