Teach English in ShengjiAng Zhen - Yunfu Shi
When beginning to teach a new class, the first lesson should be focused on learning about one's students -- their levels of competence and confidence in English, their interests, their backgrounds, and their motivations and/or goals. Course books should not be used at this stage, whereas games and rapport-building group activities will be more useful. This also applies to the beginning of all lessons; teachers should not immediately jump head-first into the course material, but rather begin with an introduction and perhaps a fun activity to allow the students time to adjust to the classroom environment and the new language. It is also possible that teachers may have students of varying skill levels. Choosing to teach to either the higher-level students or the lower-level students is not an appropriate approach. Instead, the teacher should have students of different abilities work together so that the more competent students can help the students who have more difficulty. In individual tasks, extra activities should be prepared so that students who finish more quickly will have something to do while other students are still working. In large class sizes, teachers might also find group work to be a useful strategy, as well as techniques such as choral practice and repetition. As always, only English should be used by the instructor. The teacher should not force reluctant students to participate against their will, but rather encourage participation through fun activities.
