Unit 1 contains an overview of the relationship between teachers and learners as they are the two main actors involved in the learning process of a foreign language. After defying how a good teacher should behave (both personally and professionally) the unit deepens the various roles which a teacher is likely to assume in the classroom. Manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, and observer mean very different behaviours during the lessons and towards the students: a good teacher should accurately choose the most appropriate one based on the activities he/she is carrying out, the students? needs and the goals pursued. On the other hand, the students can be divided both by age and level. In the first case, a teacher should be aware of the differences between adults and young learners concerning learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, attention span and life experience. It is possible to briefly state that adults are more motivated, but their past learning experiences might create serious expectations about the methodology and the results. Young learners are more flexible, but they lack attention and might misbehave in the classroom. Finally, the different levels of the knowledge of English need the teacher to adapt his/her speed of speech and complexity of the activities. They should be conducted to result enjoyable, interesting, varied and useful as well as bring the best possible learning outcomes.
