Unit 15 went over the topics of evaluation and testing students. There are three ways to assess a student's language level: 1. Tutorials (10 minutes at the end of each lesson - reviewing, discussing aims of the lessons, problems). 2. Evaluation by the students (questionnaire or guided discussion). 3. Tests (Ex: placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests, and external exams). Placement tests are mainly used to assess students' language ability at the beginning of a course and to put them in the appropriate level with similar classmates. Progress tests are given throughout the semester and are used to see what the students have learned, remembered, and forgotten. They are good because often students review material they have already learned. Diagnostic tests are also given at the start of the course to see what students already know and what they are lacking/need to focus on. Practice tests provide practice for external examinations. Lastly, general external examinations are given outside the classroom by outside organizations. Three popular exams are: TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language (for universities / admission), IELTS - International English Language Testing System (for study or work where English is the spoken language), and TOEIC - Test Of English for International Communication (for the work-place). Overall, unit 15 gave good explanations for evaluating and testing students along with examples of common tests internal and external.
