This unit taught me the importance of Speaking and writing skills and the need to create enthusiasm and the willingness to communicate when teaching them to your students. The unit taught me about two different types of activity that can be used to teach these skills. Accuracy activities, these are an often controlled activity used to check the students can use and understand the language being taught. Whilst fluency activities focus more on the effectiveness of the communication and less so on the accuracy. Whereas Accuracy activities often are best controlled to help ensure accuracy, fluency activities leave more room and indeed benefit from encouraging the students to be more creative. The unit taught me that in teaching speaking and writing skills it is important to create a friendly and engaging atmosphere to encourage the students to be more confident when interacting with both the teacher and other class members throughout the lesson. It highlighted the need to recognise the potential differences in structure between L1 and L2 as the differing rules and language concepts can prove more difficult to grasp depending on the student's L1. This is particularly true of writing skills where poor spelling and punctuation can be perceived negatively by others. The unit finished off by giving me some interesting resources to provide and incite ideas for incorporating both competitive and co-operative games into the classroom to help encourage creative speaking and writing.
