The teacher needs to evaluate the progress of students, through tests of course. There are a number of ways to assess a students language level, for example through tutorials, the teacher can review work that has been done, discussing the aims of the lessons and how well the students performed. Evaluation by the students can be useful as well. The students can be asked whether they feel that they are getting enough grammar, if they think the work is too easy or difficult. It is a good idea if the teacher gives periodic progress tests on the work covered, to see how the students are progressing. This can be a written test, or a informal group activity, even a game, as long as it gives the teacher the information on progression of the students. There are a number of other tests as well, for example a placement test is designed to enable teachers to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests, but just more extensive, and they are given at the start of the course to see what students already know. Practice tests should follow the format and structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for. There are different external examinations, such as TOEFL-Test of English as a Foreign Language, IELTS-International English Language Testing System, and TOEIC-Test of English for International Communication. All these test are designed to help further the progress of students.
