This unit discussed the two productive skills, speaking and writing. It talked about accuracy and fluency activities of speaking to get the students engaged in learning -- wanting to communicate verbally. Accuracy activities are most often used during the study phase and concentrate on producing correct language. This uses controlled activities such as drilling or prompting. Fluency activities are usually used in the activate phase and allow students to experiment with language flow. Fluency activities use a guided method such as dialogs or role-playing. There are many factors to consider when teaching writing such as legible handwriting, spelling of homophones (new, knew), layout (writing left to right, spacing and punctuation), and writing creatively (poetry, plays). Again, it is important to create a desire in the student so they want to learn to write and speak effectively. I found the Guidelins for a Creative Speaking Activity the most helpful in this lesson. It gave great tips on how to prepare for a lesson, what to elicit from students during the lesson, and how to provide feedback for students and yourself after the lesson. I think a great approach after reading this is to do a mock lesson to make sure you know what you are teaching and have all materials ready to go, be enthusiastic during the lesson so students are engaged and allow students their input, and give constructive feedback to students at the end of class and do an objective self-evaluation aferwards.
