This unit focuses on classroom management. Classroom management is the art of organizing and managing the class by creating a friendly environment and maintaining decorum. Utilizing eye contact, gestures and voice are three ways that can aid a teacher to create a well managed classroom. Eye contact shows students that they are all involved and indicates who is speaking, to name a couple of pointers. Gestures help to add visual interest and to convey the meaning of the language. Teachers should vary their voice according to the circumstances presented at that time. One good tip for teachers when asking questions is to call the student's name at the end of the question as this will keep the entire class attentive. The class arrangements also play a vital role in classroom management. The classroom can be arranged into three groupings i.e whole class, pairs and groups. There are pros and cons to each grouping. Teachers must also be cognizant of teacher talk time. When a teacher over elaborates this will allow students to become disinterested and may find the class boring. It is imperative that teachers maintain discipline at all times so that learning will occur. A teacher's response to problematic behavior can increase or decrease the problem. In order to handle problems effectively a teacher must stay calm and act immediately. Overall a teacher must be knowledgeable of all the classroom management skills to create and maintain a positive and productive classroom atmosphere.
