The unit was an example-based comparison of bad methods and good methods for executing a lesson plan. The first video showcased many signs of bad teaching. Some of these were more general things like speaking fast, not smiling, and spending a lot of time facing the board writing repetitive sentences. The instructor didn't have a system for using student names and disengaged the students by constantly asking their names. When he was confused or unsure of a topic, he would skip over it instead of explaining it multiple ways. The second video was a positive example that corrected many of the mistakes in the first video. The instructor was enthusiastic and smiling. He had a system for using the names of the students. He praised their successes and encouraged them through their failures. He used vocabulary that was familiar to the students to introduce a new grammatical construct. Overall, watching these two contrasting examples showcased just how impactful small details can be. Being prepared, organized, and enthusiastic is immensely valuable in creating an environment where students thrive and eagerly engage in lesson.
