This unit covered the types of assessments used during an English course. There are different types of tests that should be taken throughout the course which helps the teacher assess the English level of his/her students as well as prepare further materials. The following types of tests should be implemented by any teacher in order to properly evaluate and maintain further progress: placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests and external examinations. Depending on the individual purpose of the student, he/ she might opt for one of the following external examinations: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, CAMBRIDGE Assessment or ESOL Skills for Life. Each test has a different purpose, either to evaluate the level of English for study or work purposes, or for settling in the UK or another English speaking country. Furthermore, each test has different levels of proficiency, and based on their levels and motivation/ purpose, students will opt for a beginner, intermediate, advanced or proficient type of test.
