This unit was pretty straightforward and easy to understand. The tests that an English teacher would use all have a fairly logical rational to their implementation. I was a bit surprised by the number and the variety of different external examinations, but with millions of people yearly hoping to demonstrate their competency, I guess it shouldn't come as much of a surprise. In an English class orientated towards a function like business, the expectation to teach for the test must be great. A section with advice about how to handle students who are disappointed by test results or anxious about taking them seems like it would be helpful to include here. I think I will find myself in the camp that measures progress through observing student communication skills over written tests but I can certainly appreciate the need for them. I guess I've always felt like teaching to the test shortchanges the learning process, and am a little hesitant when testing becomes the be all and end all of the classroom's and the teacher's purpose.
