This unit discusses the ways to evaluate students as tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests, that are given at different stages in a course. Placement tests are used to place new students into the correct class, based on their language ability. Progress tests should be periodically used in order to evaluate the progress of the students and should cover the language item within the prescribed period. Diagnostic tests are more extensive than the progress tests and they are usually given at the start of the course in order to provide the teacher with information regarding the future course. Practice tests follow the external examination they are being given in preparation for. Achievement tests are usually internal tests given in the end of a course. TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC are exams, part of the General external examination.
