Although tests and examinations can sometimes have a negative connotation for students, they are an integral part of the learning process. Teachers need to know the strengths and weaknesses of students in order to meet their needs. To begin with, placement tests are used to assess a learners abilities and decide what level of class they should be in. If a student is placed in a class above their ability, they will not be able to understand the class causing them to struggle. If placed in a class bellow their abilities, they might get bored and lose focus. Once placed, a teacher might want to give diagnostic tests, to see precisely where students struggle or excel. Additionally, throughout a course, progress and unit tests are administered to help continuously assess what the students understand, and what they need more help with. Continuous testing also has the added bonus of encouraging students to study harder! Finally, the ultimate goal of a class might be to prepare students for external examinations, which they might be taking for work, school, or immigration. To further help students prepare, teachers might administer practice tests.
