I believe listening and reading skills are the most important parts of learning a new language. One's passive vocabulary will always be larger than one's active vocabulary, so it is important to nurture a student's ability to understand and immerse themselves in a language from the beginning. Language learning is like filling a bucket; once the bucket is full, it naturally starts overflowing, which in this case is analogous to a student starting to output in the target language. Besides, while we can always understand the words and sentences we speak, we can never predict what a native speaker will say, so it's important to get lots of practice reading and listening to prepare ourselves to understand what and said and written around us. The examples in this unit were quite interesting. I like using a famous musician or figure in history to teach relevant vocabulary. Whilst one is reading about Elvis, they will inevitably come into contact with musical vocabulary that they may not see otherwise. So while Elvis was used as a hook to spark the student's interest, now they can learn new vocabulary while reading about him.
