Unit 7 covered the teaching of vocabulary, grammar, and their functions. With regard to vocabulary, this unit noted that the difficulty of a vocabulary item depends on numerous factors: similarity to the students? own language, similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriacy. Teaching grammar structures presents its own set of challenges. The students should know the meaning, use, forms and patterns, and spoken and written form (differences between the two) of the grammatical structure. The teacher may employ various ESA (Engage-Study-Activate) formats to the teaching of grammatical structures, but should be careful to include all of the aforementioned points in the lesson. In addition to my comprehension of what a student should know about vocabulary items and grammatical structures, I learned different ways to teach both vocabulary and grammar. The examples presented, from straight arrow ESA structures, to sample activities such as realia, gap-filled exercises, and role-playing, were particularly helpful in thinking about how to design and execute lesson plans on this topic.
