Unit 12 deals with the two productive skills: writing and speaking. We are introduced to all the major techniques and activities to approach the teaching of these skills. Furthermore, we are provided with sample lesson plans in order to picture the theory on a quasi-tangible format. It is also stated here that writing is the most neglected skill in the EFL classroom, despite its importance. However, what I found curious, during my experience as a teacher at many levels, is the fact that many teachers avoid the teaching of writing because they may lack expertise in the skill too. In addition to the reasons presented here, I would like to point out that writing goes beyond the scope of language alone. It has to do with creative and critical thinking too. Not only that, but practice is the key to success and I would dare to say that not many teachers devote themselves to producing written materials of any sort. Thus, the importance of this unit relies on the fact that, besides teaching the writing skill effectively, the promotion of writing as a form of human, cultural and communicative expression is a need in our society.
