This unit taught me how course books should correctly be used in lessons, as well as the inherent advantages and disadvantages of their use. In particular the unit taught me not to over-rely on a course book and that to ensure the students get the full benefits of it's use, that considerations such as replacing, omitting, adapting and supplementing material it covers may be necessary to ensure the material remains relevant to the students learning. The unit further taught me that the use of authentic materials and teacher created materials can prove a great boon to teaching students in addition/as replacement of course book created materials. This is because they can often be better selected by the teacher to ensure relevance to their specific class. The unit covered the specific differences of Authentic Materials (real world materials native speakers use, not designed for an EFL student) and created materials (those made specifically for teaching EFL students, often by the teacher themselves) The unit handily gave a healthy amount of example Created material as well as suggested resources for creating such materials.
