This unit ties in nicely with the unit on receptive skills. I learned that writing skills are often the most often swept under the table and that it is important to encourage writing in the classroom in creative ways even if it means allowing for a bit extra 'quiet' time occasionally. There can be a mix of activities both partnered and individual that encourage writing and speaking. I am reminded that topics that would not encourage speaking in the classroom would be questions and conversations regarding cultural norms and ideas. While it is ok to bring students' own experiences into the classroom (ie. what is the weather like in your country? where is your news forecast found?) it is important that the classroom feels safe and that can sometimes be jeopardized when cultural values are brought up within the classroom. Games are incredibly useful in all class levels and student age groups because it encourages a fun and engaging atmosphere. It is crucial, however, that teachers prepare for those games, including the instructions, communicating the purpose of every game, and making it engaging for all members of the class.
