This unit covers the four past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. It provides information on the grammatical structures, appropriate/correct usage, common mistakes in usage, example sentences, and activity ideas for practicing usage. I had a good review of the past perfect and past perfect continuous tenses in particular. Although these two tenses feel naturally easy to use in conversation as a native English speaker, explaining how they are used and what meaning they convey is difficult. For example, the past perfect and past perfect continuous tenses are similar to the past simple and past continuous tenses in that all four are used to describe past actions; however, the viewpoints from which these past actions are described are different. For the past simple and past continuous tenses, the past actions are described from the present viewpoint. In contrast, for the past perfect and past perfect continuous tenses, the past actions are described from another past viewpoint. As a result, the voice, situation, and meaning of the sentence varies depending on which tense is used.
