The two videos in Unit 10 clearly illustrated what a difference the instructor makes in the classroom. Also, the manner through which Unit 10 uses comparison of the two videos makes the concepts taught in earlier units more palpable and less abstract. In the first video, even I -- a native English speaker -- found it difficult to understand and follow the teacher's lesson because he failed to connect and truly engage the students. The second video exemplifies the extent to which a teacher can motivate and assist students. Rather than repeating the concept of \"modal auxiliary verbs,\" the teacher utilizes the simple concept of animals to lead into applicable examples of these verbs. In the second video, the teacher's use of gestures helps the students to understand the actions such as walk, swim, crawl, etc., and simultaneously helps the students to feel comfortable in the classroom environment because the teacher is not so stern and rigid. Additionally, the use of printed and drawn animal pictures allows the students to apply knowledge that they already have of animals to the use and practice of modal auxiliary verbs.
