This unit focuses on the qualities, roles and responsibilities of both teachers and learners in the classroom. A good teacher should be kind, patient, lively, entertaining, have good subject knowledge, love teaching, motivate and correct learners. He/she plays the following roles: manager, assessor, prompter, participant, facilitator, tutor, and model. He/she should play the appropriate role depending on the type of lesson being taught. Certain factors should be taken into consideration when dealing with learners of English: age, culture, language awareness, learning experience, language level and motivation. Learners also have their own responsibilities in English language learning. They should willingly listen to the language, desire to learn and experiment with it, as well as accept error correction. Unit 1 is very important as it provides me with information to have a cordial relationship with my learners. It also helps me to know the roles that I have to play as a teacher in the classroom. In fact, I have gained so much knowledge on my responsibilities as a teacher as well as those of my learners in the classroom.
