Unit 5 emphasizes the numerous considerations necessary in developing an effective lesson plan. The age and language level of the students is of foremost importance in choosing a language point (what the students will be able to do after the lesson is complete.) Next, the means of engaging them and getting them talking in English as the class begins can set the tone for the entire lesson. Moving smoothly into the study/practice stages, it is important to keep the students awake and excited about learning, and to keep them communicating in English. Songs, chants, music, games, stories, creative writing, arts and crafts, drama and movement are the keys--but which ones for which classes? The choices are numerous and challenging. Finally, the activate stage where all the learning comes together gives the students an opportunity to demonstrate their new knowledge and abilities with a creative activity. Hopefully, the teacher has spoken as little as possible--but the entire experience is the result of her effort combined with resources at her fingertips.
