In this lesson, what stuck out for me was the emphasis on both fluency and accuracy. My wife (also a teacher) and I just went to our son's third grade conference, and spoke with his teacher at length about fluency and accuracy. My son apparently has been emphasizing fluency at the expense of accuracy when reading aloud (a trend that holds when he is speaking and writing as well), and the teacher seemed surprised. I think my son is like this because we have emphasized fluency in our household perhaps more than some parents, because I think we have assumed that accuracy will always be dominant in classroom settings, and so my son has adopted that mindset. Perhaps that has tipped his mental scale toward fluency, thereby upsetting the delicate balance between the two. Therefore, the statement at the beginning of this unit about the balance between the two was heartening and a good reminder. Additionally, I appreciated the variety of activities presented, particularly in the study phase, as it would be easy to assume some rigid drill would suffice. This rich variety allows the study phase to not only be purposeful but engaging.
