Unit twenty focuses on troubleshooting in the classroom. Some teachers may have to handle problems that crop up in first lessons, a classroom full of students at different levels, and large classes. There are chances a teacher may have issues when students use their native language, students who are reluctant to participate, and students who have difficulties with listening texts. There are multiple ways to approach each problem. First lessons should consist of students getting to know each other and getting to know the teacher, while the teacher also tries to learn more about the students. Teachers can try using different materials, or different tasks for students who vary in language level. In large classes, teachers can make good use of worksheets, and pair/group work. To avoid the use of native language in the classroom teachers can choose to only respond in English, and ensure the activities are the appropriate language level. Teachers can manage reluctant students with controlled practice, and use of role-play. Teachers shouldn?t disregard listening texts when students are having difficulties, but work through it.
