Unit 7 discusses reading and writing, the receptive skills. Theses skills are equally important and are both essential to learning a language. Without these skills, people would not be able to read instructions or listen to the radio. People read and listen for two main reasons: a purpose and for fun. Examples of reading or listening for a purpose are reading instructions for a new watch or listening to the weather report. Reading a novel or listening to a comedy show are examples of reading or listening for fun. When teaching receptive skills in class, it is very important for the teacher to carefully choose reading and listening materials. The teacher wants to choose topics that interest the students so that they are engaged and participate in the lesson. He also should consider whether the materials are appropriate for the language level of the students, choosing dialogues that are challenging while not too difficult. When the teacher selects materials that cater to the interests and needs of the students, the students will be engaged and participate in the lesson, therefore successfully learning the new language.
