Speaking and writing are both productive language skills. Writing is the most neglected. Accuracy and fluency in writing and speaking are both equally important. Accuracy activities are focused on producing correct language. Fluency activities are focused on allowing students to be creative with language. Accuracy activities include drilling and prompting and guided role play. Fluency activities include discussions, free role play, debates and simulations. Encouraging speaking in the classroom may be a challenge for a number of reasons, like a lack of confidence or lack of interest. Teachers can encourage speaking with the use of pair and group work and careful planning. Writing is another productive skill that is as equally important to speaking, but the most neglected. Teachers need to highlight and focus on the importance of spelling, grammar and punctuation in order for students to accurately produce written English. Creative writing is important in allowing learners to practice free-flow writing without too much fear of making mistakes. Games can be used in the classroom to enhance participation in writing and speaking.
