The final unit of the course considered the various types of assessment that teachers of English might find expedient in the course of their duties. Teachers can give students a clear sense of their own progress, to a considerable extent, simply by carefully monitoring events in the classroom and providing regular feedback. Other means of informal assessment, like individual tutorials and evaluation by the students themselves, can also enhance students' awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses. In many cases, however, formal testing will be necessary to gain clarity about students' knowledge and capabilities -- indeed, in many cases, it is an institutional requirement. The author considered the varieties of formal assessments, including those designed to gauge pre-existing language ablity (\"Placement\" and \"Diagnostic\"), those designed to test students on knowledge gained in a given course (\"Progress\"), and those designed to prepare students for external tests of English level. The unit concluded with a discussion of a number of common external tests of English ability, including the TOEFL and the Cambridge exams.
