This unit introduces two of the four basic language skills: Listening and Reading which are Receptive Skills. First, the different types of listening and reading are shown such as skimming and scanning. Factors to consider when selecting receptive skill-testing materials are provided such as the level of the students as well as their interests. This is followed by an example lesson plan, example lesson materials, and tips on how to create a lesson plan than focuses on Receptive skills. Information from this unit has been useful in my experience as an English teacher, especially during a Christmas Lesson where students listened to Wham's \"Last Christmas\". At first, the students were able to listen to the song once with the lyrics presented. Afterwards, new vocabulary and their pronunciation were introduced by practicing reading them out loud and by completing a rhyme matching worksheet. The students then were asked to listen to the song and fill in the blanks. Unfortunately, due to time constraints this lesson did not have an Activate portion, but perhaps a writing activity on what one wants for Christmas would be successful.
