This unit was straightforward and useful. After going through lessons about grammar, lesson plans, and groups of learners, it is useful to prepare as teachers for what situations will most likely arise and challenge us. It is best to prepare for these situations and understand some techniques to engage or avoid to better handle the situation. For example, the section on teaching a reluctant or nervous student recommends several things to teachers to bear in mind: role-play may help a student feel more comfortable because they'll be embodying someone other than themselves; pairing with a partner for activities rather than having students speak in front of an entire class may reduce nerves; do not single out one student to produce an answer... rather let students engage on their own terms, which may not be out loud in front of an entire class. Overall this section seemed to emphasize gentleness and understanding toward students as they present you with challenges because ultimately, they're offering what they can to us as the teachers and it will be our job to meet them where they are and be the most effective teachers we can be.
