There is no general consensus on the efficacy of course books. Some advantages to the course books are that they?re structured, have tested exercises, good continuity, and are ideal for inexperienced teachers. However, they don?t always fit specific needs, may be hated by the students, and can eventually become predictable and boring. Ultimately it is up to the teacher to use the course books in a way that either fits the students? needs whether it be omitting, replacing, supplementing, or adapting the material. It is up to the teacher to judge the course books? syllabus, topics, ancillary materials, design, and difficulty to see whether it is fit to implement in a lesson plan. In addition to course books, teachers should look into the use of authentic material, such as English newspapers, and creative material, like crossword puzzles, to supplement lesson plans. I?ve learned that a mixture of authentic and creative material might be the best approach since teaching students to interpret authentic material can greatly increase their confidence while created material can be tailored towards their interests.
